How to reach Dubrovnik

By airplane

The easiest way to reach Dubrovnik is by plane. Dubrovnik airport called Čilipi is located 17 km from the town and is connected to major European cities. There are direct flights from/to Frankfurt (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday), Paris (Wednesday and Sunday), Amsterdam (Monday), Rome (Tuesday and Saturday), Vienna (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and London (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday). To other destinations Dubrovnik is linked through multiple daily connection flights with Zagreb. Airlines flying to Dubrovnik include: Croatian Airlines, Austrian airlines, Lufthansa, Iberia, Easy Jet, Spanair, British Airways, Air Berlin, SAS, and many others.

There are several possibilities to get from the airport to your hotel:

Dubrovnik airport buses: If arriving to Dubrovnik airport on a regular flight, there are regular buses departing from the airport to the city. Price for one way is 5 EUR and travel time is around 20 minutes.You can take a bus to the town “Pile” which refers to the main entrance gate to the old town of Dubrovnik. From there you can change to bus no. 6 towards “Babinkuk” which drops you off next to the hotel. When travelling from Dubrovnik, the departures of the regular buses from the main bus terminal are 90 minutes before the estimated takeoff time.

Taxi: For those preferring to take a taxi to Dubrovnik there are taxi-cars waiting throughout the entire day (just outside the airport hall). A taxi (for four persons) from the airport to Dubrovnik should cost about 200-250 HRK (or 30-35 EUR) and take about 1/2 hour, if there’s no traffic. We advise you to ask for the price before you get into the taxi!

Pre-booked Airport Transfer: There are several options of booking on-line and they offer vehicles of various sizes so that the price per person can range from 5 – 10 EUR. You can check the following web-sites for booking: Taxi and Transportation Service Dubrovnik or Dubrovnik Transfers.

By car

If you choose to drive then the recommended way is to follow the highway from Zagreb or Rijeka to Split, then the road E-65 to Dubrovnik. 24-hour traffic information is provided by the Croatian Automobile Club, Tel: +385 (0)1 4640-800. If you are not up for driving, you can always load your car onto a ferry in Rijeka or Split.

By bus

The bus service offers cheaper alternative to travel across Croatia and to Dubrovnik. There are express buses which cover larger distances and are very comfortable.

By boat

Ferries operate by Jadrolinija link Rijeka, Split, Dubrovnik and many other places in between, and offer an excellent opportunity to enjoy beautiful coast line and thousand islands. Dubrovnik is also linked with Italian port of Bari.

Visa requirements

Citizens from EU countries and UK citizens need only a valid passport or national identity card. Holders of non-EU passports should check with the appropriate consulate to see if a visa is required.

Aliens who are holders of:

• Schengen residence permits,
• Schengen uniform visas (C- two or multiple entries)
• long-stay visas (D)

temporarily do not require a visa for entering and stay or transit through the territory of the Republic of Croatia. Above mentioned Schengen documents must be valid at the moment of leaving the Republic of Croatia. Facilitated entry of aliens applies from 1 January 2012 until 31 December 2012.

• Other countries with visa exemption

  Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brasilia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Macau, Malaysia, Macedonia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, San Marino, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, Uruguay, USA, Vatican City and Venezuela.

• Russia (Russian Federation)

  Citizens of Russia do not require a visa to enter or do business in Croatia. However, they need to present the following: Ticket for return journey, Proof of accommodation (e.g.: hotel reservation), Invitation Letter or proof of booking.

• Nationals of all other countries

  Citizens of all remaining countries need to apply for a visa prior to their travel to Croatia. If this applies to you, get in touch with the Croatian embassy or consulate in your home country or the country of your current residence.

  We can ONLY issue confirmation letters when a delegate is duly registered to ILP 2012, i.e. a registration form has been made, and the related registration fees have been fully paid and received by our accounting office.

  The list of Croatian diplomatic missions and consular posts is available on the web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diplomatic Missions and Consular Offices of Croatia and Visa Requirements Overview. In order to apply for visa you need Visa Application Form, Registration Confirmation letter, Hotel and Flight reservation, Passport, and Picture (30 x 35 mm). After you fill in the form and gather all required documents please contact your nearest Croatian Embassy. Travel visa expenses are about 25 EUR.

  Visa application may be submitted not earlier than three months prior to the planned date of entry to the Republic of Croatia, and can not be issued earlier then two months prior to the planned date of entry to the Republic of Croatia. The participants are advised to submit their applications on time.

Currency

The official currency of Croatia is the Kuna, which trades at 100 HRK=US$19.1 or €13.4. Throughout the Dubrovnik town you will find ATM’s that can access your funds via the usual global networks (Cirrus, Maestro). You will also find money changers (called Menjacnica) in the old town and the hotel. Many places (restaurants and so forth) accept major credit cards, particularly in the old town, though it is advisable to still carry some petty cash.

Climate

Dubrovnik has a typical Mediterranean climate, with mild and wet winters and hot and dry summers. However, it is perhaps distinct from other Mediterranean climates because of winds and frequency of thunderstorms. You may experience some Bura wind blowing down the Adriatic coast between October and April, and thundery conditions are common all the year round, even in summer, when they interrupt the warm, sunny days. The air temperatures can slightly vary, depending on the area or region. Typically, in July and August daytime maximum temperatures reach 29°C, and at night drop to around 21°C. More comfortable is the climate in spring and autumn when maximum temperatures are typically between 20°C and 28°C.
